When you fall off the wagon with your workout routine and start eating a bunch of crap and sit on the couch watching TV and forget about your workouts, you lose a lot of progress which is obvious. But how much do you lose? I've noticed that being away from my hardcore training for about 3 years now that I've still maintained about 75% of my strength but a very low percentage of my cardio output. This was showing it's ugly head when I was lifting as well. I couldn't last as long even though my strength wasn't down too far.
So this morning I went running for the first time in a very long time. I've done some cardio over the last few months but very minimal and usually on an elliptical and not really running. This morning I went outside and ran along the river. It was pathetic. :) I couldn't last anywhere near my best before. Oh well, I'm not trying to break any records, just trying to push myself further. I've never been a fan of cardio; I've done it only because it is a necessary component to change. But now it's even harder since I've lost so much ground. I wish I could remember what it was like that cold morning back in Jan 2001 when I started training for the first time. Hopefully I was a little better than that but I doubt it. :)
