Week 9

This week made up for last week. I lost the weight that I gained last week but the body measurements still haven't changed much. The reason for this is I haven't had a balanced workout in a while. By balanced I mean that I've focused primarily on the upper body and have neglected the lower half. I've had good cardio on the days that I run but I've avoided leg workouts for a while now for two reasons (Neither of which is a good reason btw): 1. I'm afraid it will make my cardio sessions bad because of the "rubber-leg" issue the 2 days after working legs. 2. I hate working legs. I always have hated it and it's tough to get back to forcing myself to hit my legs hard. Even at the beginning of this current journey, my leg workouts were like going through the motions and not hitting them really hard. I know I need to do this. I need to focus just as hard with my legs as I do my chest but I'm just like most guys...we hate working legs and wish we could just lay there and press barbells all workout. :)

During week 8 when I gained the 2 pounds wasn't because I fell off the wagon. I actually did most things right. I did have pizza on Wednesday but along with eating right the rest of the week and good workouts, I shouldn't have gained weight. There are two possibilities for why this did happen however. First of all, and I feel this is very important, your mind needs to be in the game when you are working out. If you aren't pushing yourself and focusing on the muscle you are working then you end up just going through the motions. I wasn't sore at all that week and it's because I wasn't pushing myself and I just went through the motions. You need to really be there and target those muscles and feel it work if you want to make progress. The other reason that could have been a factor was just the simple point that weight fluctuates all over. You weigh different throughout the day and that fluctuation can make you think you did something wrong. That's why it's good to never get down just because of one bad reading on the scales. Look at the overall trend of your weight before getting upset or changing your program.

I'm hoping this week is better with my leg workouts and that I focus hard on the rest. I have to go out of town this Friday and it will be tough to maintain focus with tempting bad food around but I'm going to do my best and the site will be updated next Sunday evening when I get back. Have a good week everyone, watch what you're eating...summer is right around the corner. :)

week 8

Well this last week didn't turn out as I had hoped. I'll post later with more ideas as to why the progress wasn't there but a lot of it has to do with the body getting accustomed to workout routines and how things need to be changed up once in a while. More on that later but the measurements are posted as is Rick vs Brad.

measurements are up

The website has been updated with week 7 results. I'm just happy I didn't gain weight given what happened that week (see below post for details)

Also check out Rick vs Brad. Everything is posted to the site.

After weeks like this, it's important to maintain focus more than ever. Don't let one bad week knock you completely away from your goals. What's done is done. Focus on the next week and push towards your goals with no stopping!

week 7

Weeks like this one come all the time and what matters is how we react to them. Let me explain. There were layoffs at work last Wednesday and I was close to being included. After the news, I went to lunch and didn't care about what I ate. So we went to Golden Corral and I started with salad with little dressing and grilled chicken, but I didn't stay with that. I had 3 more trips to get all kinds of fatty foods. Then followed up with hitting the dessert bar pretty hard. I didn't drink my protein shake in the afternoon because I wasn't hungry (this shows that I definitely ate too much since I should be hungry every 3 hours if I ate the perfect amount). Then for dinner I had chicken wings, sugar cookies, fudge, and beer. That day sucked.

Thursday I was working from home and there were the leftovers of the cookies and brownies so of course I ate them. Also didn't drink much water at all this day.

Friday I had lost focus for the week because of all the slips so far and it was hard to stay motivated. I ate pizza at the bar for lunch on Sunday while I watched the KU game.

As far as workouts go, I started the week great with some solid weightlifting and a little cardio. I didn't workout Wednesday, Thursday or Friday until I played ice hockey on Friday night...first attempt at that.

Saturday I came back around a bit, which is amazing given my history with bad weeks getting to me. I had a solid weightlifting session and cardio. I ate good up until the afternoon and then I didn't eat anymore. I felt bad about the junk I put in my system and also didn't feel like going out to get some healthy food so I didn't eat at all. Let me tell you right now, that is NOT smart. Odds are I started burning some muscle while I did't fuel my body with the nutrients it needed.

So to sum it up, stress got to me a bit and slowed my progress but the good news is that it didn't slow me much...AND I was able to get a good workout on Saturday instead of just waiting for the next week to focus again. So I'm happy with that.

Rick vs Brad week 6

The results are up and it it still a VERY close race even after 6 weeks. We are both losing at the perfect rate of around 2 pounds a week so there is a better chance we are losing fat and not water or muscle...as long as our diet allows for growth of new muscle. :) Anyway, head over to:

http://www.runfatboyrunyan.com/rickvsbrad

to see the latest after 6 weeks. So far so good but summer is coming right around the corner.

Week 6

Things look a little better with this morning's measurements. After losing only 0.2 pounds last time, I'm back on track of 2 pounds a week after losing 3 this week. After 6 weeks I'm down 12 pounds...right on schedule. So it was a good week and I feel good about the measurements. So now I'm off to eat junk today since it's my free day. :) Good luck everyone.

I'll update when I have Brad's measurements for Rick vs Brad.

Week 5 and Rick vs Brad

Well the measurements are up for the week and the Rick vs Brad contest was updated as well. Brad has taken over the lead...for now anyway. I didn't make much progress at all as far as weight loss goes and my measurements didn't change with was a disappointment but I'm definitely looking leaner in the mirror. Weeks like this just happen and the best thing you can do is not let it get to you and keep moving forward with the determination that progress WILL happen. These weeks can be killers for anyone. You do everything right and it looks like you didn't make any progress and that can be a showstopper. Just be aware that you don't lose weight linearily and there will be times where the progress flatlines but it WILL change. Keep at it and don't let it take away your motivation!

Week 4 is complete

My measurements are posted on the site at

http://www.runfatboyrunyan.com/rickrunyan_progress/measurements.html

I'm down 9 pounds after 4 weeks. Nothing exceptional but a steady drop is all I can ask so I'm happy. Just tired of having no energy and not liking the person I see in the mirror. Can't wait to get myself back. Hope everyone out there is having luck with their fitness goals. Rick vs Brad will be posted as soon as I get the measurements from Brad.

Rick vs Brad week 3

Well it looks like we both made progress but not as much as the first 2 weeks. That's expected though, we really should average about 2 pounds a week throughout. He did lose more than me during this week and has currently lost more percentage than me so the pressure is building. :) We'll see if he can keep that up.

week 3 measurements are up

Not too much progress this week. My diet was good. The only down side would have to be the amount. I know I didn't eat enough and that can hurt. I had 2 cardio sessions and 3 lifting sessions (2 upper body and 1 lower body). My upper body is recovering a lot quicker and because of this I feel next week needs to be changed up a bit. This could also be why my progress wasn't as much as it should have been. My body is getting used to the workouts and it's not forcing it to change. So next week has to be upped especially on my upper body workouts. It should be interesting to see how this affects me.

You always need to change things up when your body gets used to a workout or a fitness routine. My strength is increasing and my energy level is rising as well so things are still good, just not as good as I want. :)

I'll have Rick vs Brad updated as soon as I get Brad's weight.

Friday Week 3

Things have been going well during week 3. I haven't missed a single workout and my diet has been good. I haven't drank as much water as I should though. That used to be so easy for me but lately I just haven't been doing it. Lots of stress has hit me over the last week and a half. Possible loss of job, relationship problems, etc. So the fact that I stayed the course and didn't slip up and give up on a workout or eat pizza is a HUGE thing. I really believe I'm on track now and I'm already feeling much better. Can't wait for the old me to return and I can start wearing everything in my closet. :)

WEEK 1 down

Well I've officially finished up my first week of getting back to the "old Rick".  Results were good but I'll have to wait a few days to get them posted on the site.  My Windows laptop crapped out this morning so I won't be able to edit my website with the results.  You can still go over to

http://weightlosswars.com/rrunyan

to see updated stats but I'm afraid you'll have to wait a few days before RICK vs BRAD is posted...plus I have to wait until Monday or Tuesday to get Brad's results anyway.  He's a slacker.  :)

Rick vs. Brad

OK, it's on guys.  A friend of mine is challenging me to a weight loss contest.  Each Sunday I'll post our progress for bragging rights on my website.  I'll put the link on here this Sunday once I make the charts and get them posted.  Keep checking back and leave comments on here to root for me.  :)

Day 3 and going strong

My diet has been spot on and my workouts have been good.  I'm getting back into the swing of things with the program and I'm trying to keep everything online updated as well.  Each Sunday I'll post my measurements up and I will continue to do this until I reach my goal of losing 50 pounds.  See my next blog for more details on how my webpage at www.runfatboyrunyan.com will look.

DAY 1

OK, I know I've had many "Day 1"s but this time I really do mean it. This is a new start for me and one that I need to accomplish. Things have changed a bit in my life and there is now no reason for me to fail once more. I'm sick of it. I'm sick of only barely fitting in some of my clothes. I have a closet full of good clothes that just sit there with only a handful of shirts and a couple jeans that actually fit...kinda.

So this is a new start for me. I'm at 252 pounds right now and I will get back to my "fighting" weight by summer. In order to do this I'll need to stay focused.

I will be updating this blog as often as possible, hopefully every day and I go through this journey. Knowing people are checking this out and my sight are great motivators so I appreciate you taking the time to read these. Wish me luck, I'm going to need it.

Heartburn sucks

I tell you ever since I've really fallen off the wagon I've had really bad heartburn again. I use to get it all the time but since I started eating clean and working out it went away. Now it's back with a vengeance. Can't wait til I'm back on track and fell so much more energized. Next Monday is very soon!

The Return of Hardcore

OK guys, it's been a while but the return is coming soon. Over the holidays i was sick quite a bit and was out of town eating junk. So far this year I'vve been very lazy and lost a lot of ground. But it's time to return to 2001 when I was hardcore with my training and nutrition plan. Starting next Monday I will be updating this more frequently and keeping my measurements up at runfatboyrunyan.com

So stay tuned for some hardcore training and progress. I'm tired of being the fat boy and I want to return to the old Rick
